About Heidelberg
A city of 140,000 inhabitants on the river Neckar in Baden-Wurttemberg, Heidelberg is famous for its university: one of the oldest educational institutions in Europe, dating back to 1386. The university is associated with the names of prominent thinkers such as Hegel, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Jurgen Habermas and Karl-Otto Apel. It was at Heidelberg University that in 1817 Posselt and Reimann discovered nicotine as the active component in tobacco. Apart from the university, this leading center of knowledge also boasts a Cancer Research Centre, a Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, an Institute for Astronomy, and an Institute for Nuclear Physics. A city of long and eventful history, Heidelberg has a medieval castle perched high on top of a steep hill overlooking the Neckar. Worth visiting in the Old Town are the Baroque-style old university building, the Jesuit church, the Markplatz, and the old bridge with a gate.
