About Karlsruhe
Located in the south-western part of Germany near the French border in Baden-Wurttemberg, Karlsruhe houses the largest oil refinery in Germany and two of the country’s leading Internet providers. The city is nicknamed “the fan city,” as streets seem to radiate from the centrally located castle like spokes on a wheel or like the ribs of a fan. The market place in the Old Town is surrounded by the Town Hall, the main Protestant church and the tomb of the city’s founder, Margrave Karl Wilhelm. A park stretches to the north of the castle. Karlsruhe is proud to be the birthplace of the inventor of the automobile, Karl Benz, and it was at the University of Karlsruhe that Hertz discovered electromagnetic waves.
