About Lubeck
Praised in the past as the “Queen of the Hanseatic League,” Lubeck is the home town of Thomas and Heinrich Mann and of Willy Brandt. Also another Nobel Prize winner for literature Gunter Grass lived and worked there. Apart from that Lubeck is famous for its marzipan industry. The Trave connects the city with the Baltic Sea, a canal connects it with the Elbe, and the harbour definitely contributed to Lubeck’s prosperity at the time of the Hanseatic League. Surrounded by water, the Old Town has largely preserved its Medieval aspect. It is a maze of small alleys, churches, warehouses and merchants’ houses, and has been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.
