About Mainz
Mainz is the capital of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, located on the left bank of the Rhine River. The first settlers in the area were Roman soldiers, who established a stronghold here under the name of Moguntiacum. Today, the local Museum für Antike Schifffahrt displays fragments of five Roman boats, constructed in the 4th Century. Visitors can also admire a number of other remains from that epoch, such as the ruins of a theatre, Jupiter's Column, Drusus' Mausoleum and an aqueduct. Interesting cultural artifacts from other periods can also be seen all over town. The Gutenberg Museum exhibits a genuine Gutenberg Bible printed in the 15th Century.
