About Potsdam
The capital of Brandenburg State lies just 26 kilometres southwest of Berlin, and was a favourite royal residence back when Berlin was the capital of Prussia, and later the German Empire. Its most distinguished attraction is undoubtedly Sanssouci Palace – the former summer palace of Frederick the Great – with its splendid Rococo interior and its beautiful terraced gardens, large fountain and vast park with pavilions and fine marble sculptures. In the town’s centre, the Old Market Square is dominated by the Classicist St. Nicholas Church and the Old City Hall with its circular tower. Another notable attraction is the Dutch Quarter, with its red-brick houses which accommodated the Dutch craftsmen who settled in Potsdam in the 18th Century.
