About Rostock
The largest city of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in northern Germany, Rostock lies on the river Warnow just 12 kilometres from the Baltic Sea coast. Thanks to its seaport, it flourished as a member of the Hanseatic League. It also became home of the oldest university in Northern Europe (1419). The 19th Century marked another period of prosperity mainly due to wheat trade and ship building. Today Rostock is a key destination for cruise tourists, with sites of interest such as the New Market Square with the Town Hall and beautifully restored 15th- and 16th-century houses, St. Mary’s Church – a fine example of Brick Gothic, and the pedestrian area of Kropeliner Strasse.
