About Trier
Claiming to be the oldest city in Germany, Trier lies on the river Moselle amidst rolling vine-covered hills. Its history goes back to 2000 B.C., when a settlement was first founded there by Trebeta, son of the Assyrian king Ninus. The city is well known for its preserved Roman and medieval monuments such as the Porta Nigra that is the best Roman gate north of the Alps. Roman remains include also an amphitheatre and a bridge over the Moselle. The Trier Cathedral contains the Holy Tunic – a garment that Jesus presumably wore when he died. The Church of Our Lady is a fine example of early Gothic cathedral. Trier is the birthplace of Saint Ambrose and of Karl Marx.
