About Rhodes
The City of Rhodes is the capital of the third-largest Greek island of the same name, belonging to the Dodecanese island group in the Aegean Sea. It is distinctly divided into a Medieval Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a bustling and modern New Town. Impregnable walls and gates and a massive Gothic castle built during the rule of the Knights of St. John (14th - 15th Century) give the Old Town a unique look. A beautifully preserved cobblestone Street of the Knights goes down from the castle to the port. It is possible to walk on the city walls, which offer breathtaking views over the imposing defense structures. At the entrance to the harbour, there are two pedestals where the famous Colossus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is thought to have stood.
