About Eger
Famous for the best red wine in Hungary, Eger lies in the northern part of the country, east of the Matra Mountains. It flourished during the reign of King Matyas (1458-1490), and in 1552 successfully fought back the first attack of the Ottoman Turks. The town’s heroic defense by about 2,000 men, women and children against the 80,000-strong Ottoman army was immortalized in Geza Gardonyi’s famous novel The Stars of Eger. The Castle with its Cathedral is Eger’s most important historical building. The town also contains the northernmost mosque in Europe and a Turkish bath. Eger’s pleasant atmosphere as a historical town, its beautiful Baroque architecture, the thermal springs and excellent wine cellars in the area attract an ever-growing number of visitors.
