A famous spa resort on a lake of the same name near the western end of Lake Balaton, about 8 kilometres from Keszthely, Heviz is a preferred place for the treatment of rheumatic, orthopedic, gynecological and skin disorders, and for recovery following accidents. Heviz is the largest natural thermal lake in the world, covering 47,500 square metres. Its water is slightly radioactive, with a very strong flow (the lake is believed to be completely replenished daily), and its temperature varies between 39oC at the source and 33-34oC at the surface, depending on the weather. The lake’s curative powers were probably known back in Roman times, but the actual history of balneological treatment in Heviz goes back to the late 18th Century, when the first floating bathing house was built. Today, the resort boasts modern facilities last rebuilt in 2002, along with a vast and well-maintained park.
