Located at the western end of Lake Balaton, Keszthely is a charmingly small town of 23,000 inhabitants cuddled among vineyard-covered hills and occasional pine and oak groves. The town’s main tourist sights are situated along the pedestrian street connecting the present Main Square and the area of Festetics Castle: the Town Hall, the Franciscan Monastery with its Gothic church, the Holy Trinity statue and the Synagogue. Festetics Castle is the fourth-largest aristocratic mansion in Hungary, and the most beautifully renovated. It was built in the 19th Century, and today houses a museum and a conference centre. The original furniture can be seen in its library, which contains 86,000 volumes. Also worth visiting are the Mirror Gallery and the beautifully-landscaped park. The town’s other remarkable building is the Neo-Baroque Balaton Museum, showcasing the flora, fauna and history of the Balaton area.
