About Nagykanizsa
A town of about 51,000 inhabitants in south-western Hungary, Nagykanizsa enjoys a convenient location near Lake Balaton, at the meeting point of important routes to Slovenia, the Adriatic Sea, the Alpine region, Budapest and Vienna. Its industrial and business development led to the opening of numerous banks in the second half of the 19th Century. Nagykanizsa became the centre of Hungary’s oil industry, and its light source factory, now owned by General Electric, is one of the biggest in the world. The town contains a few Baroque monuments such as the Vasemberhaz, the Franciscan Church and the Holy Trinity sculpture, a castle gate-shaped monument erected in the place of the demolished fortress, and a myriad of small shops in the elegant courtyard of the one-time Del-Zalai Savings Bank.
