About Sarvar
A small town of 16,000 inhabitants on the banks of the river Raba in the West-Transdanubian region in western Hungary, close to the border with Austria and Slovenia, Sarvar is famous for its thermal baths. First inhabited by a Celtic tribe, the town flourished during Roman times, was fortified by the Hungaruans in the 10th Century, and was ruled by a series of noble families from the 13th to the 18th Centuries. With the arrival of electricity and the railway in the 19th Century, it developed as an industrial centre focussed on silk and sugar. A new thermal and wellness spa opened in 2002. Sarvar’s most remarkable sight is Nadasdy Castle, a building erected from the 13th to the 16th Centuries, with a three-storey tower and vast knights’ halls. Other architectural landmarks include the Saint Marcus Church, the Saint Michael Medieval Catholic church, the Saint Ladislaus Church and the Town Hall.
