About Sopron
Lying close to the Austrian border, 60 kilometres from Vienna and 220 kilometres from Budapest, Sopron is praised as Hungary’s “most faithful town” in memory of the plebiscite in 1921 when the population chose to be part of Hungary instead of Austria. It was spared from socialist-era industrialisation, and its beautifully preserved architecture, clean air, green surroundings and excellent wines rank it among the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary. The emblematic Firewatch Tower, the 19th-Century Town Hall, the Goat Church, the Baroque Holy Trinity Statue and the neo-Gothic Ursuline Church form the heart of the historical centre, surrounded by winding streets, arched gates and elegant Renaissance and Baroque buildings. They provide a great setting for events such as the Festive Weeks, the Old Music Days, the Spring Days and the Wine Festival.
