About Balbriggan
The town of Bunratty is situated north of Limerick in the heart of the Clare County. It is set on the charming little river Ratty, a tributary of the Shannon. Bunratty is the essence of pure Irish spirit as it has survived till nowadays since the times of castles and rebels. The town center is dominated by the most famous attraction of the region - the Bunratty Castle. Throughout its history the fascinating medieval building was destroyed and restored about 10 times. It was held by the famous Irish freedom fighters the O'Briens, after they took it from the rival clan - the MacNamaras, who had actually built it. The castle was object of battles, for influence and just causes. And the many local wars it suffered brought it ruins many times. It was finally restored in its present state by Lord Gort in 1960. Since then visitors freely explore its mysteries and stories of glorious times. An interesting collection of 16th century furniture is exposed together with some historic objects from various époques.
