About Kilkenny
Kilkenny, located on the river Nore in southern Ireland, is one of the most popular weekend getaways in the country. With a population of less than 10,000, it's officially the smallest settlement with the status of a city in Ireland. Kilkenny is often called the Marble City, as many of the buildings in the city were constructed of black stone adorned with white fossil fragments. Kilkenny Marble was once a famous local product exported to all parts of the British Empire. Today, the city is best known for the production of Smithwick's and Kilkenny ale, and as the site of the St. Canice Cathedral with the fantastically preserved Round Tower.
