About Agrigento
Founded as a Greek colony of the name of Akragas in the 6th Century BC, Agrigento was an important city of Magna Graecia on the southern coast of Sicily. Its most notable tourist attraction is the so-called Valley of the Temples, whose Doric temples are reputed to be the best-preserved ancient Greek buildings outside of Greece. The site also contains a small amphitheatre and a fine archaeological museum. A few necropolises from later Roman times and some elegant Medieval buildings have also been preserved, such as the 14th-Century Romanesque Gothic Cathedral, the 13th-Century Church of San Nicola and Church of Santa Marie dei Greci.
