About Assisi
A popular site of pilgrimage, the birthplace of St. Francis stretches on the slopes of Mt. Subasio in the Umbria region of Italy. Its most remarkable attraction is definitely the Basilica of St. Francis, mother church of the Franciscan Order and a World Heritage site. Built immediately after the canonization of St. Francis in the 13th Century, it is divided into an Upper and a Lower Basilica, adorned by frescoes by Giotto and Cimabue. Although damaged badly by a disastrous earthquake in 1997, the Basilica was restored and reopened in just two years. The Romanesque Cathedral of San Rufino, the Church of Santa Chiara and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli with the Porziuncola (a small church where the Franciscan movement first started) complete the list of Assisi’s landmarks.
