About Civitavecchia
Civitavecchia is situated in the province of Rome, in the central Italian region of Latium. In Italian, the name of the city means 'ancient town'. The modern city was erected over an earlier Etruscan settlement. Today, Civitavecchia is a major ferry harbour, with connections to Sardinia and Barcelona. The main places of interests are the enormous fortress of Forte Michelangelo, erected in the 16th Century in order to protect the port against attack from pirates, and the Rocca Castle with the Apostolic Palace. The area of Civitavecchia is home to the popular thermal baths of Terme della Ficoncella.
