About Como
Just 45 kilometres north of Milan, close to the border with Switzerland, lies Lago di Como, praised as the most beautiful lake in Italy, and the charming small town of Como. Dating back to Roman times, the birthplace of Pliny the Elder, Pliny the Younger and Alessandro Volta has been famous for centuries for its fine silks. Its imposing Cathedral (Duomo) is an interesting blend of a Gothic façade and a Renaissance dome. The walled Old Town contains fine 16th-Century buildings, and the Baradello Tower offers a magnificent view over the entire lake. Lago di Como is renowned for its magnificent lakeside villas and picturesque small towns such as Tremezzo, Varenna and Bellaggio, to which you can take a boat trip.
