About Lucca
The birthplace of Giacomo Puccini, Lucca is a small town in Tuscany near the Ligurian Sea. It is full of curious buildings, including a tower with a tree on top (Torre Guinigi) that can be climbed for a magnificent view of the town, and a Cathedral that was joined subsequently with the adjacent bell tower, giving the façade a curious asymmetrical appearance. The town’s most emblematic building, however, is undoubtedly the Church of San Michele in Foro, whose façade towers three tiers of columns higher than the church itself, as money ran out before the church could be raised to the level of the façade. Each and every column is different, and the building is adorned by the statue of an archangel with hinged wings. A unique wall system encloses the historical centre. Built of specially-created small red bricks, with a wide pleasant road running along their top, the walls were never tested in war and since their construction in the 16th-17th Centuries have been a favourite place for walking and cycling for the inhabitants of Lucca. Several splendid villas are also well worth a visit, such as the Baroque Villa Torrigiani, the vast and beautiful gardens of Villa Reale, and Villa Mansi with its lavish frescoes and English-style park.
