About Montepulciano
A hill town of just 14,000 inhabitants in central Tuscany, Montepulciano has an interesting location, stretching along a limestone ridge, making it long and narrow, with its steep main street measuring 11.5 kilometres long from Piazza Grande at the hilltop to Porta el Prato. This street (the Corso) is lined with stately buildings, fine examples of 16th-17th Century architecture. The town’s architectural landmarks include the Communal Palace, the Cathedral, Palazzo Avignonesi, Palazzo Nobili (Tarugi), Palazzo Cocconi, Palazzo Buccelli, Palazzo Cervini, the Church of St. Augustine and the Church of the Madonna di San Biagio. Montepulciano is encircled by 16th-Century walls which were designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder at the order of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo I de’Medici.
