About Orvieto
Perched on a high plateau of volcanic tufa in southwestern Umbria, its skyline dominated by the magnificent Duomo, Orvieto is reached by a funicular from the railway station or by a system of elevators dug into the rocks. A complex network of underground passages dates back to Etruscan times, and was extended and used throughout the Middle Ages. Another remarkable architectural feat is the Pozzo di San Patrizio, a spectacular well designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger for Pope Clement VII. Its double-helix ramps surrounding the shaft allowed the unobstructed one-way traffic of mules laden with water. The Gothic Cathedral (Duomo) is certainly Orvietto’s most well-known landmark. Its facing striped in sparkling white travertine and black basalt, its façade adorned by splendid mosaics, the Cathedral contains frescoes by Fra Beato Angelico, a magnificent Last Judgment by the Renaissance Tuscan artist Luca Signorelli, and a famous miraculous cloth known as the Corporal of Bolsena, which is paraded with much pomp in the city during the Feast of the Corpus Christi.
