About Padova
A vibrant centre of science, art and culture during the Renaissance, boasting some of the best works of Giotto and Donatello, Padova is today a bustling industrial, commercial and university town.
The famous Basilica of San Antonio, where the saint’s relics are kept, has seven Byzantine domes reminiscent of San Marco’s in Venice, and contains a magnificent High Altar by Donatello. The 13th-Century Gothic chapel, Capella delli Scrovegni, is covered with frescoes by Giotto from floor to ceiling. Don’t miss Prato della Valle, a vast oval square surrounded by a channel and lined with fine sculptures, or the adjacent Botanical Garden where exotic flowers and plants are on display. The 13th-Century Palazzo della Ragione, with its graceful arcade and large hall, its walls covered with allegorical frescoes, is one of the city’s most well-known architectural monuments. Unfortunately, a fire in 1420 destroyed its original decoration by Giotto.
