About Perugia
Once an important centre of the Etruscan civilisation, Perugia is now the capital of the region of Umbria in central Italy. Piazza IV Novembre is the heart of the historical city, praised as one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. It is flanked by the left side of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, a building with large Gothic windows, elegant arches and fine choir stalls. On the other side of the square rises the Palazzo dei Priori with the beautiful Sala dei Notari, its vault supported by huge Romanesque arches and its walls covered with frescoes. The square is adorned by Fontana Maggiore, a jewel of a Gothic fountain designed by Fra Bevignate and decorated with marble sculptures and reliefs by Nicolo and Giovanni Pisano. Other landmarks include the Church of San Pietro, the Church of St. Michael Archangel, the Basilica of San Domenico, and the Etruscan Arch.
Perugia is also famous for its chocolate, and hosts an annual Chocolate Festival in October, as well as a famous jazz festival in July.
