About San Gimignano
A Medieval hill town of 7,000 inhabitants not far from Siena, San Gimignano is famous for its 13 towers and its fragrant white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Tracing its origins back to an Etruscan settlement in the 3rd Century BC, the town flourished during the Middle Ages as a pilgrims’ stop on the way to Rome. The towers that can be seen in San Gimignano today were not unusual in Medieval Italy, as rich families would erect them both as fortified dwelling places and as signs of prestige; however, most of them have been destroyed by wars and natural disasters, while those in San Gimignano have remained remarkably intact. Other notable Medieval buildings include the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Palazzo del Podesta and the Church of St. Agostino.
