About Sirmione
Lying on the southern shore of Lago di Garda, on a small peninsula that stretches into the lake, Sirmione is an attractive small town with a wealth of history, the imposing yet graceful Scaliger Castle and a popular health spa. The Roman poet Catullus praised it as “the gem of all the peninsulas”, and mentioned having a villa in the area. The old town contains a number of beautiful villas such as Santa Maria Maggiore and San Pietro, a dozen of hotels, outstanding food, markets and fashion boutiques, and an amusement park for children. On the tip of the peninsula, which can only be reached on foot, there are the remains of a Roman structure known as Grotte di Catullo; from there, the view over the lake is breathtaking.
