About Taormina
A charmingly small town in Sicily, Taormina has been a favourite tourist destination since the 19th Century. Goethe praised it in his Journey to Italy, but it was thanks to a young German artist by the name of Otto Geleng, whose Sicilian paintings made a sensation in Paris and who went back to Taormina to open the first hotel there. Since that time, Taormina has won the hearts of Truman Capote, Alexander Dumas, Anatole France, André Gide, Guy de Maupassant, John Steinbeck, Gustav Klimt, Oscar Wilde, Richard Wagner, Ingmar Bergmann, Francis Ford Coppola, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Federico Fellini, Cary Grant, Marcello Mastroianni, Elisabeth Taylor and Woody Allen. The ancient Greek theatre is still the site of opera performances and concerts. The clock tower, the marble Baroque fountain, and the beautifully landscaped Public Gardens are among the town’s notable attractions, while restaurants offer sumptuous local specialties such as seafood salad tossed with olive oil, stuffed artichoke hearts, eggplant baked with cheese and tomatoes, grilled swordfish rolls, tuna stew and torta cassata.
