About Viareggio
Famous for the production of luxury motor yachts, Viareggio is a town of 6,000 inhabitants on the Tyrrhenian Sea in Tuscany, 25 kilometres west of Lucca. Named after the Medieval Via Regis [Royal Road] along the coast, it hosts attractive cultural events such as the Puccini Opera Festival and a colourful Carnival. Viareggio has a long beach of fine sand, a 16th-Century fort called Torre Matilde built to protect the town from pirate raids, and some of the best-known Italian language courses for foreigners.
