About Riga
Latvia's capital Riga lies on the Daugava river, on the coast of the Baltic Sea. With a population of about 730 000, it is the largest city in all Baltic states, a major industrial, commercial, financial, political and educational center. Half of Latvia's industries are concentrated in Riga: pharmaceuticals, textile industry, furniture, communications equipment, food and beverages. It is an important seaport, ferries linking it with Stockholm, Lübeck and Kiel. Foreign trade received a boost as Latvia became member of the European Union in 2004.
