About Ohrid
Ohrid is probably Macedonia’s most beautiful town, cascading down a hill to the shore of the dazzling Lake Ohrid and rich in monuments and picturesque buildings. During the Middle Ages, it was known as the Slavic Jerusalem, and 15th-Century Ottoman traveler Evlia Celebi wrote that there were 365 chapels in the town, one for every day of the year. Ohrid is dominated by Samuil’s Fortress on the hilltop, which used to be one of the most impregnable strongholds in the Balkans. Eighteen towers and four gates have survived, and the massive walls offer the best panorama of Ohrid and the lake. Apart from magnificent churches such as St. Pantheleimon, St. Sofia and the Monastery of St. Naum, Ohrid also boasts a magnificent collection of Eastern Orthodox icons.
