About Saint Paul`s Bay
In 60 AD, the Apostle St. Paul, who was on his way to Rome by sea, shipwrecked in this bay and was given a warm welcome by the locals, hence the name of the inlet on the north coast of Malta, about 16 kilometres from Valetta. A large statue of the Apostle stands on the small island, in the bay where the shipwreck allegedly took place. It was also here that the Great Siege of Malta by the Ottoman forces ended in 1565, when the Ottomans gave up and sailed home. Qawra and Buggiba are the main resorts here, and there’s a nice seafront promenade, along with the remains of Wignacourt Tower, reminiscent of the place’s past as Malta’s northernmost defensive point.
