About Bergen
Bergen is Norway's second largest town. It used to be the country's capital until 1299. Situated on the south-western Norwegian coast, it has been an important commercial port and a gateway to the majestic Norwegian fjords. Surrounded by hills, it has also been described as the 'city of seven mountains'. Its climate is warm, with abundant rainfall the town has become notorious as a place where it rains most of the time. However, the rain does not seem to influence the festive spirit of the locals.
With a population of about 240 000, Bergen's strongest points are its oil industry, its lively harbour and its university. However, as a lively cultural centre with preserved architecture and traditions and numerous events, the town attracts a crowd of visitors. It was named European city of culture in 2000, and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
