About Haugesund
A town of about 40,000 inhabitants on the North Sea in Norway, Haugesund is a busy commercial port, conveniently sheltered from the rough waters by the island of Karnoy and several smaller islands. Two notable events take place at Haugesund: an annual jazz festival in August which celebrates the local herring, as the coastal waters used to be a rich source of herring, and the local population mostly made their living from fishing, and the International Film Festival boasting a rich geographical and cultural selection. Avaldsnes, the royal residence of Harald Fairhair and other legendary kings from Norse sagas, is just a few kilometres away.
