About Gdansk
Gdansk (Danzig) is Poland's main seaport and capital of the Pomeranian Voivodship. It lies on the Baltic Sea, and together with Sopot and Gdynia forms a metropolitan area called the Tricity with a population of over a million. Gdansk itself has a population of 460 000 and is the largest city in Eastern Pomerania. An important seaport since the Middle Ages and a ship building center, the city was a member of the Hanseatic League. It is today a major industrial center, and is known as the birthplace of the Solidarity movement.
