About Porto
Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal with 1, 551, 950 residents in the city proper and 263, 000 in its 15 townships. Its former name was Portucale, and it is also known as Oporto. Located on the Douro River in the northern region of Portugal, it is in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, which has given it the advantage of being a historic trade center. Porto has always held its own against Lisbon in terms of financial strenghth, even though it is twice as small as the capital. Many conglomerates in Portugal have their main offices here.
