About Setubal
Lying on the northern bank of the estuary of the river Sado, about 40 km south of Portugal’s capital, Setubal is known as an important centre of the fishing industry. Arrabida National Park, with its unspoiled nature and two magnificent beaches, is the major nearby tourist attraction. The town’s main historical monument is the Monastery of Jesus, a fine representative of the late Gothic style known as Manueline. The Bay of Setubal is member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club, and a natural habitat for the conservation of the bottle-nosed dolphin. The town contains historical structures such as the Curtain Walls, the Sao Filipe Fort, the Santiago do Outao Fort (now a hospital), the Arrabida Fort (now housing the Oceanographic and Fishing Museum), the Convent of Jesus, the Santa Maria de Graca Church, the Arrabida and the Palace of the Dukes of Aveiro. The region is also famous for its cheese and its red wine, known for its fruity flavour.
