Located at the confluence of the Sava and the Sora, northwest of Ljubljana, Medvode can be reached by city bus from the Slovenian capital, and is a strongly industrialised area with more than 400 enterprises. The town’s architectural landmark is the Castle of Goricane, former residence of the bishop of Ljubljana, containing valuable works of art. Zbilje Lake is a favourite area for recreation and sports: rowing, sailing, water-skiing, fishing - or just relaxing and feeding the swans. Sora, a village nearby, boasts a famous restaurant and a huge conference centre. A church with a bell tower stands on the peak of Smarna Gora, reminding of the times when a mighty stronghold fought off Ottoman attacks.
