About Leon
A city of 135 000 inhabitants in north-western Spain, capital of the Castile and Leon autonomous community, Leon is famous for its Cathedral and for the density of bars and clubs in its Barrio Humedo area. Leon was founded in the 1st century B.C. as a Roman military camp. Its name derived from the Lation legio, from the Roman legion that was stationed there to secure the transport of the gold extracted in Las Medulas to Rome. After attacks by Visigoths and Muslims in the 8th and the 9th century, Ordono II made it capital of his Kingdon of Leon in 914, and Leon became one of the most prominent Christian cities in Iberia. Pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela would pass through Leon. Trade, crafts and cattle breeding were responsible for the city's prosperity and growth until the 16th century when a period of economic decline set in.
