About Murcia
Lying in a fertile plain on the Segura River in southeastern Spain, 75 km south of Alicante, Murcia was founded in the 9th Century by the emir of Al-Andalus. The city prospered as a complex network of irrigation channels was built, and traveler Muhammad al-Idrisi described it as populous and strongly fortified. The town changed hands many times from the 12th to the 14th Centuries, ending up as part of Castile. The 18th Century saw a boom of the silk industry, and many of the town’s churches and monuments date back to that period. Built between 1394 and 1754, the Santa Maria Cathedral is a combination of Castilian Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Classical influences. Next to it stands the 18th-Century Bishop’s Palace. The Casino in Traperia dates back to 1847, and is remarkable for its sumptuous intrerior and Moorish-style patio.
