About Karlstad
A town of 58,000 inhabitants named after King Charles IX, Karlstad lies in mid-western Sweden, on several islands in the delta of the river Klaralven, where it flows into the large Lake Vanern, and is Sweden’s second-largest lake port. It was the site of negotiations on the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway in 1905, an event commemorated by a Peace Monument in the city square. Remarkably, the town has chosen the sun as its symbol, standing for its good business climate and friendly attitude. With vast forests to the north and a picturesque lake to the south, Karlstad is a haven for nature lovers, hikers, bird watchers, boaters and swimmers. It’s also home to Karlstad University.
