About Lulea
Located at the northern end of the Gulf of Bothnia at the estuary of the Lule River, Lulea has been an important harbour since the 13th Century, and more recently home to Sweden’s ice breaker fleet. With their grid pattern, the town’s streets are notorious for their wind currents, to the extent that the central street has been dubbed “wind tunnel”. The Church Village of Gammelstad on a small island of the Lule River delta nearby is a UNESCO World Heritage site. At its centre is a 15th-Century stone church surrounded by 424 wooden houses, where worshippers would stay overnight when unable to return home before nightfall.
