Lugano's history can be traced back to the 10th century. Between 1513 and 1798 it was a Swiss dominion, after which it gained independence and became a member of the Swiss Confederation (Canton Ticino). Its simple coat of arms contains the initials LUGO, but in fact this is merely an abbreviation of Lugano. "Lugano" derives from the Latin "lucus" or "sacred wood".
