About Antalya
Spread picturesquely on a steep cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Antalya is one of the most favoured resorts on the Turkish Riviera. It has about 600 000 inhabitants but swells to two million in summer as tourists flock to the area to enjoy the crystal-clear emerald sea, the inviting beaches, the green forests, the ancient ruins and the pleasures of the Turkish hospitality industry. The legend goes that in the 2nd c. B.C., King Attalus II of Pergamon sent his men in search of "heaven on earth". They discovered the place where Antalya now lies, he founded the city, called it Attaleia and based his powerful fleet there. Although continually harassed by pirates, seeing different rulers come and go, the place invariably flourished through the ages, and bears the charm of many civilizational layers.
