About Bristol
Bristol, together with Plymouth and Exeter, is the heart of south-west Britain. It is a centre of administrative region. The most important thing is its being situated on the ocean - so the port of Bristol has been central to the economy of the city for over a millennium... Before the Industrial Revolution, when Manchester, Liverpool, Dover took over, Bristol was the second biggest city in the UK after London. In the XX-th century for 20 years Bristol was part of the newly established County of Avon, but in 1996 it gained its administrative independence, and its again a city, a county in itself.
