About Leicester
The largest city in the East Midlands, Leicester spreads out on the river Soar and has a population of about 285,000 people. It is one of England’s oldest cities, dating back to Roman times. At present, its major industries include food processing, engineering, electronics, knitwear and plastics. The heart of Ipswich's Victorian centre, it is dominated by the imposing Clock Tower. Other landmarks of the area include the Cathedral of St. Martin, the timber-framed Guildhall, and two Medieval chapels, St. Mary de Castro Church and St. Nicholas Church. What's more, Leicester boasts the largest and one of the oldest covered markets in Europe. Nearby, there are two other significant shopping centres, the Haymarket and the Shires, which offer everything from groceries to exquisite jewelry.
