About Portsmouth
Located on England’s southern coast in the county of Hampshire, Portsmouth has always been an important naval port in the region. In the 14th Century, the town was already being used as a stronghold against France, which wanted to dominate the wool, wax and wine trails that led to Portsmouth from all over Europe. In the 15th Century, the city received its first fortifications, most notably stately Southsea Castle. Regrettably, during World War II the Nazis bombarded Portsmouth, which at that time served as the headquarters of the British army. Of the most recent attractions, the most worthwhile is 170-metre-high Spinnaker Tower. Shaped like a sail, the tower boasts the largest glass floor in Europe, along with three observation platforms offering magnificent views of the town and harbour.
