About Salisbury
A small city located in Wiltshire, southern England, Salisbury is sometimes referred to as the New Sarum, to distinguish it from the original settlement that no longer exists. Undoubtedly, Salisbury's best-known landmark is the magnificent 11th-Century Cathedral – though built in the Old Sarum, the monument was moved to its present location two centuries later. Surprisingly enough, the Cathedral was erected in just 38 years, which helped to maintain the consistency of its early English Gothic style. The church also boasts the tallest spire in the UK (123 m), and a library that contains one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta from 1215. Besides that, the chapel has the oldest mechanical clock in Britain, installed in 1386 and still in operation. Apart form a popular tourist attraction, Salisbury is also a convenient starting point for a trip to Stonehenge, situated only 13 kilometres away from the city.
