About Sheffield
With a population of about 516,000 people, Sheffield is one of largest cities of the English Core Cities Group, the association that unites the eight most significant English cities apart from London. Located in South Yorkshire, northern England, Sheffield is famous mainly for its thriving steel industry, which dates back to the time of the first Industrial Revolution. Around that same time, the city also witnessed the discovery of numerous significant industrial inventions, such as silver plating and stainless steel, to name just a few. Today, in contrast with its industrial traditions, Sheffield is Europe’s greenest city, comprising a national park, 150 woodland areas and over 50 municipal parks. Sheffield is also a cultural centre of the region, boasting a large theatre complex, four art galleries, beautiful Winter Gardens, an impressive Town Hall with adjacent Peace Gardens and a number of museums.
