About Stratford-upon-Avon
A small town in Warwickshire, Stratford is one of the most popular tourist destinations in England. The birthplace of probably the most recognisable playwright ever, William Shakespeare, Stratford takes great pride in this association and offers a wide range of attractions connected with the celebrated writer. On the bank of the Avon River stands the well-preserved Royal Shakespeare Theatre, which hosts the influential Royal Shakespeare Company. At present, the Company also manages two smaller local theatres, The Swan and The Other Place. Originally Shakespeare’s home, the Other Place was destroyed by one of the subsequent owners, leaving only its foundations. Yet another monument connected with Shakespeare is the Holy Trinity Church, where the playwright was baptised and later buried. Near the church, there are also the former houses of Shakespeare's wife, mother and father, all three of which still attract thousands of tourists every year.
